Here is our obligatory Christmas-tree-with-presents picture. Kind of a small tree this year. It was a real tree that my grandmother sent us, and it worked out fine. We took more pictures, so I'll post them to a different page later. This was our first Christmas away from home (usually we fly to Kentucky) and it went better than I thought it would. We got up, turned on the DirecTV Christmas tunes, took down the stockings, sorted out the presents, and opened them; pretty standard. Later in the day Mike came over and we watched some DVDs and drank a little. Not a bad way to spend Christmas.

Christmas. This is our first Christmas away from home. We're recreating what our combined idea of Christmas morning is like at our house. We have stockings, despite not having a mantle above our fireplace. We have a live tree that is about a foot tall, thanks to my grandmother. And we are waiting to open all presents Christmas morning, despite Kim's complaints. I'll post pictures of our Christmas corner once it is finished, which will be that morning. All we are missing is Willie Nelson's Pretty Paper playing in the background and I might as well be in Kentucky. Perhaps I'll buy the CD.

The teaser for Spider-Man 2 was posted in an acceptable format finally. It looks great to me.

I went to pick up our Return of the King tickets today at the Arclight. Since Pajaro bought them with his card while Kim and I were flying to KY, I had him come with us in case they had to have the person with the credit card; just covering all the bases. So we get to the front of the line, Pajaro gives him the card, the guy keys it in, and I put in my account number so I can get credit for the tickets. The ticket guy scowls at his screen and says, "Oh, I have some bad news." As soon as I heard that, my brain sent the message to my lungs to "gather air and prepare for 'The Shout At'", but I held on waiting for his side of the story. The ticket guy looked to me very sadly and said, "I can't give you points with the ticket screen up..." We waited...and he continued, "but I can put them on your account tonight." Pajaro and I continued to wait for the bad news he was talking about, but the guy just stared at us. So Pajaro says, "So we can still get the tickets, right?" The ticket guy looked a little stunned and said, "Yeah, of course." He quickly printed them out and handed them to me with a smile. So I have my tickets for Return of the King tomorrow night, and it almost cost me a heart attack.

In other news, they are supposed to be showing the teaser for Spider-Man 2 (which is on the internet, but in a format I do not condone) before Return of the King, as well as the teaser for The Chronicles of Riddick (which could be considered Pitch Black 2, but not really.)

Being sick sucks. Enough of that, though. One of the guys at work told me about some DVD collection software called DVD Profiler. If you have a large DVD collection, I highly reccomend it. For one thing, it's free. After entering all of my DVDs (give or take a few stragglers that are loaned out), it says I have 334. That's not bad. Here is a screenshot of the interface. Your DVD list is on the left, current selected DVD information in the middle, scans of the front and back of the box to the right, and a hypertext cast list to the far right. If you click on an actor or director, it will tell you what else in your collection they have done. Click the graphic for a bigger picture.

As if that wasn't enough, it also has a web interface where you can share your list. Feel free to peruse our DVDs.

The new Battlestar Galactica mini-series on sci-fi has ended. I am not a die-hard fan of the original, but I do remember it and I remember enjoying it. I was really looking forward to seeing the new one, and I think my expectation was a little too high. So after the first episode I was left wanting. However, I enjoyed the second episode much more and I hope it gets picked up as a regular series. I'm going to watch it over again, with my expectations at the right level, and I think I'll like it a lot.

In other news, my buddy Shane who takes great pleasure in falling asleep during things I find very entertaining (he fell asleep three times in a 20 minute demo for Half-Life 2 while sitting less than six feet from Gabe Newell) has seen Return of the King. His words to me before seeing it where, "I'll try to stay awake." His words to me afterwards were more enthusiastic; words like "spectacular" and "beautiful", and something about "putting Star Wars and The Matrix to shame". So from the mouth of a non-Tolkiennite comes high praise for Return of the King. It is one week away.

While I was home for my reunion, I spent some time rummaging through the boxes in my room. I found a bunch of old pictures and newspaper clippings, so I'm going to scan them in and post them. Here is the first batch. They're from my last days in Kalamazoo, MI in 1986 before I moved to Glasgow, KY. I'm hoping to get back in touch with some of these people, just to see what they've been doing for the last 17 years since I left. Enjoy, there will more to come later.

We got back from vacation yesterday. It was nice to visit Kentucky, but nice to be home. I just haven't felt like blogging much, and to be honest I still don't. There's a lot to tell, and yet, I don't feel the will to put it all in here. There should be a big update soon, but not tonight. So this isn't a total waste, I'll say this, we started watching the The Two Towers Extended Edition tonight, and like The Fellowship of the Ring Extended Edition, it is an improvement on the original film. We didn't finish it because Kim is sick and started to nod off, but we'll finish tomorrow. The added scenes I've noticed so far develop the characters more, giving the audience interesting information about each one. For instance, I'll bet you didn't know that Aragorn is 87 years old. Watch the extended version, and learn.
