Mike, Kim, and I went to see The Core yesterday. It was just as spectacularly terrible as I thought it would be. It has some great moments that are supposed to be really dramatic moments in the film, but made us all laugh out loud. Disaster movies have gotten to the point where they are almost self-mocking, and the The Core is no different. If you're in the mood for some bad movie fun, this is a good one to see.

We've been doing some gaming lately. Kim beat Age of Mythology last night, and I'm still working on Freedom Force. Freedom Force is a very good game. I want to post some screens with the Marvel characters imported, but I have to unlock the levels in the single-player first. I'll see if I can post them in the next few days.

Yesterday, my boss's boss (due to a new hire, he is technically my boss's boss's boss or great grandboss, but that isn't the point here) organized a lunch time quest to find Shadowbane, a new online role-playing game. He has been known to make every attempt to find new games on the day of their release, and it is always entertaining to watch him browbeat a lowly store employee. We came up short at Fry's, but on the way to get lunch, I had Nate call Planet X in the Glendale Galleria to see if they had it. I used to work at a smaller game store like Planet X and I know that they get games the day they come out and can put them on the shelves. I also did some time at a Best Buy and I know that bigger electronic stores might also get games the day they come out, but that box is always buried behind 10 refridgerators and 140 15" monitors. So they don't usually get to it until the next day. Anyway, Pajaro bought some copies for the guys at work (including our boss) at Planet X. I didn't pick one up, but I did buy Freedom Force for $10 at Fry's. I might pick up Shadowbane if the other guys like it and play it for a while, but I'm still working on Neverwinter Nights, Age of Mythology, Ghost Recon, and Warcraft III. I'd like to start Morrowind sometime, I just bought Command and Conquer: Generals off ebay, and two big Star Wars releases are looming on the horizon. In addition to all of that, I am nearing the end of of my script rewrite so I'll need to do a final polish soon.

In other news, we had our living room carpeted and are having some lighting and wiring done. Kim has a remote control dimmer now on some of the lights. She mentioned yesterday something about making all the lights in the house remote control and running through the house turning them on and off with the remote like a laser gun. I'll let you know how that goes.

The GIAS forum regulars have been busy photoshopping again. Click here for the damage. It might help if you read Mike's write up about our LotR screening first.

Over the weekend, Kim and I hosted the first leg of a Lord of the Rings discussion group made up of Kim and I, Brad, Mike Pajaro, and Mike Pusateri. Mr. Pusateri was kind enough to take some pictures of our visual aids and map. We watched the extended cut of Fellowship of the Ring and paused it for questions. There was also homemade beer, pizza, wings, and chips. Overall, a pretty nice way to spend a Saturday afternoon. I hope we can put something like this together for the extended version of The Two Towers.

So, there's a war or something and nothing is on TV. Kim and I were forced to watch an old X-Files episode on DVD while we ate our dinner. I'm not going to write about the war because I'm sure that plenty of other bloggers are writing about it. I'm not interested in politics much. I'm more interested in a Star Destroyer made of Legos.

After almost 21 hours of work, my friend Jeremy has completed his latest Valentine's Day gift. It consists of over 3000 pieces. That is pretty sweet.

I finished Dune last week and I've started Snow Crash. It comes highly recommended by some guys at work. I'll probably read more of the Dune series later, but after reading it, watching the movie, and watching the series, I'm pretty sandy.

There is a 4 minute preview for The Animatrix DVD on the net. I'm going to keep talking about this stuff until you people watch it. It's cool dammit!

Kim and I went to see Audioslave last night at the Palladium. The venue reminded us to find the emergency exits no less than 3 times, and all the men were searched twice before entering. There were two opening acts that were OK, but Audioslave was phenomenal. They are one of the best live bands I've ever seen. If you don't already know, Audioslave is basically Rage Against the Machine with a different singer; that singer being Chris Cornell who used to sing for Soundgarden. So these guys have all been doing the rock star thing for a while. It is obvious while watching them that they still really enjoy it, too. I like watching bands that are enjoying themselves as opposed to bands who are facing their demons on stage or brooding or whatever. Anyway, the concert was great. We were even treated to a fist fight before it started.

Star Wars Galaxies has been delayed without a new release date. This makes me sad and angry. That release date was kind of set in stone, so the fact that it got pushed means there are some big problems. I know a guy who knows a guy, etc., etc., that is playing the beta and his quote was, "Prepare to be disappointed." I want this game to be really good. At least Knights of the Old Repubulic is still on track, but I'm still torn between buying the Xbox version (which comes out about 6 weeks ahead of the PC version) or the PC version. Since it is an RPG it feels PC to me, but since it is coming out on the Xbox first, that usually means that is the system they were developing it on and anything after that is a port. I'll try to hold out for the PC version, but without Galaxies to tide me over, it may be difficult.

Now that The Ring is out on DVD, I think that people are going to try to find out about the other versions of this movie out there. I'll try to compile everything I know about them here.

In 1989 a book was released called Ring written by Koji Suzuki. It told the story of a cursed video tape that brought about your death 7 days after watching it. In 1995, there was a TV movie made based on the book called Ringu: Kanzen-ban. In 1998, the book was made into a movie again by Hideo Nakata and called Ringu. This is the version of the story that caused all the fuss and got everyone's attention. It is a very scary low budget Japanese horror movie that was wildly successful in Japan and started a small following in the States. The Japanese don't waste time when it comes to getting out sequels, so 1998 saw the release of Ringu 2 and also a spinoff movie called Rasen aka The Spiral. Ringu 2 was also directed by Hideo Nakata, but Rasen was not, so Ringu 2 is the official sequel. The story of the book was remade again in 1999 and released in Japan as Ring aka The Ring Virus. The success of Ringu and Ringu 2 eventually spawned a TV series called Ring: Saishuu-sho aka Ring: The Final Chapter. In fine comic book fashion, a prequel story to Ring was released called Ringu 0: Baasudei aka Ring 0: Birthday in 2000. All this took place in Japan. That brings us to 2002 when Dreamworks remakes the original story yet again and releases it as The Ring in America. So to sum up, the book has been made into 3 films and a TV movie and spawned 2 sequels, a TV series, and a spinoff film. Now, a red herring out there is a film called Honogurai mizu no soko kara aka Dark Water that is based on a book by Koji Suzuki and directed by Hideo Nakata. However, it has nothing to do with the Ring story. Everyone understand now? Basically, if you want to see the "original" you need to see Ringu directed by Hideo Nakata and maybe its sequels Ringu 2 and Ringu 0.

Nicky the Jew doesn't like The Matrix or Lord of the Rings! Someone set him straight with a rude email, please.

Even though it is the ugliest site on the internet and run by people whose opinions can be bought with set visits and doughnuts, I visit AICN daily because they do get a lot of movie scoops. Today, I see this link to a story "STAR WARS EPISODE III SPOILER". My initial reaction was to click, but ever since my experience with Episode II, I'm avoiding all spoilers for Episode III. I didn't think it would begin so soon. I'm not even sure the script is finished yet, so how could there be spoilers? Anyway, I have passed the first test. I will remain Travis that is ignorant of Episode III and diminish into the west.

This will be a long entry.

Wednesday after work, Kim and I came home and packed our stuff for Las Vegas. We packed enough clothes for two nights (just in case), picked our Hollywood Insider costumes, printed out directions to Bally's and left. The directions looked innocent enough: 170 S to the 134 E to the 210 E to the CA 30 E to the 15N all the way to Vegas. Somewhere around the 210 E leg is where we hit a wall. The directions specifically said, "take the CA 30 E towards Lone Hill Ave". We didn't see a CA 30 E, but we did see Lone Hill Ave where we got off. We realized that wasn't a highway, so we got back on the 210 E and continued for about 20 more miles. We thought we may have missed the 30 exit, so we headed back on the 210 W. When we hit Pasadena, we knew that something was amiss. In reality, there is no CA 30 E and you have to actually go AWAY from Lone Hill Ave. After a few calls to Pajaro, we were on our way and hit Bally's at about 12:30am. We knew that we would be busy all day Thursday, and we still wanted to gamble some, so we headed downstairs to the tables.

We took out $200 and sat down for some blackjack. The lowest we could find was $15 a hand minimum, which I wasn't particularly comfortable with, but we proceeded anyway. We had it in our minds to double our bets when we lost, but at $15 every hand, you will quickly be betting over $100 a hand. On the big amounts we would chicken out and bet smaller, but then we would win. We lost our $200 the first night. When we got back to our room, it was about 2am, and I had not eaten anything since my lunch at noon that day. I ordered room service and got a hamburger, fries, and a milkshake. Not bad for $27.

The next morning after getting the run around some, we were able to pick up our ShoWest badges and invitations to the Universal product reel screening. It was about an hour of trailers for their movies this year. The highlights were the new Hulk trailer and the preproduction stuff on Van Helsing. Hulk could be really good. We saw some scenes of the transformation and a lot of new action scenes. I'm really looking forward to it. Van Helsing is another monster movie from Stephen Sommers (The Mummy, The Mummy Returns) starring Hugh Jackman as the monster killer and apparently every monster from the Universal library. The art they were showing looked really good.

After the reel screening, we went to the luncheon. It didn't take us long to realize that this is not a side of the business that interests us. The people who were at this luncheon were not movie fans at all, but rather money fans. They don't care if Hulk is any good, they just hope it sells a lot of Mountain Dew.

After the luncheon, we went to the screening of Dreamcatcher. It was pretty similar to the book right up until the end. Kim liked it, but I don't think I liked it very much. I don't think that Stephen King's slang from his books works on the screen, and I didn't believe Morgan Freeman as a villain. After the movie finished, we had some time before the dinner started, so we thought we'd try some more blackjack.

This time we were adamant about sticking to the strategy. This time we found a $10 minimum table and we had better luck. Armed with $200, we started playing. Eventually, the "strategy" dictated that we bet all of our remaining money (now $100) on the next hand. Remembering our mistakes from last night, we did. Betting $100 on one hand of blackjack is an interesting experience. It takes the game to another level. We won that hand, thankfully, and were rejuvenated. We went back and forth winning and losing and we were doing OK for a bit. We hit a slump and decided to sit out a few hands. Now with the strategy in mind, we couldn't figure out if sitting out a hand meant we should restart our bet at $10 or bet our remaining $105 on the next hand. We had left the table and the dealer was shuffling, so that was clearly a break. However, we had been lucky on our first hand from a new deck every time. So we sat down and bet it all. We were dealt a 12, and the dealer had a 7 showing. I leaned over to Kim and said, "He has 17, I fucking know it." So I took a hit and got a 2...14. 14 obviously loses to 17, but maybe he only has 9 under there and he'll have to hit. So I stood on my 14. The guy next to me took a hit and got an 8, the 8 that would have given me 22 and broke me if I had taken it. So I felt better about it. However, the dealer DID have 17 and he scooped up my black chip and red chip without even looking up. Kim and I left the table a little sullen. We got some satisfaction out of the fact that the hand was unwinnable, and that we played it right.

We still had some time before the big awards dinner, so we walked over to Caesar's Palace to browse around for a bit. The dinner ended up being a waste and we left before the stars started getting awards. Since we had just dropped $400 gambling, we thought that I should probably show up for work on Friday since I don't get paid if I don't show up (my being a contractor and all). Our drive home was much quicker than the drive out there.

At the end of it all, we had a lot of fun and got to play Hollywood for a day. Normally, a post like this would be full of pictures, however, our camera and its brand new batteries were not working, so we have none. You'll just have to take my word on all of it.

Kim got us some tickets to see Audioslave on March 17th. That should be a good show. Also, Pearl Jam is going to be in L.A. in June, and those tickets go on sale this Saturday. Some places online are already pre-selling them...for $795. I'm hoping we can get them for less. And finally, chances are good that Kim and I will be heading to Vegas tomorrow night to go to Showest on Thursday. Someone with significantly more pull out here was able to get some passes at short notice. I'll plan on taking the cameras and maybe shoot some video. We could see a lot of cool stuff, or we could see a lot of boring projection technology. I've never been before, so we'll see how it goes. If nothing else, we'll be in Vegas.
