I was checking my referral logs recently and I was getting several hits from a site in Japan. I can't read the site, but it looks like a blogger specializing in Elijah Wood found my blurb about him at E3 and posted something about it. Since I am getting some hits from it, I suppose I should tell the whole story. And since my E3 2003 write up may not make it, here is the story.

This year at E3, Kim and I had media badges. However, on the third day of the expo when I met up with my buddy Shane, who writes for a big gaming mag, I learned that even within the "media badge" clique at E3, there are levels of power. Kim and I, being from a media watchdog organization, were on the low end of that scale. Shane was not. The Rockstar Games lounge was like a nightclub; guarded entrance, velvet rope, and a group of people clamoring to get in. Shane shouldered his way to the front of the crowd, flagged down a PR guy, and said, "Pickle, this is my boy Travis. Can we crash here for a bit?" And we were in. We sat down on a big white couch and were served some bottled water. While Shane and his buddy chatted, I looked out at the longing gazes from the crowd of people on the other side of the rope. At the front of the crowd, I saw a familiar face; comedian Robin Williams. So picture this, Robin Williams (a celebrity) was patiently waiting to get into a place where I already was. I tapped the PR guy and said, "Dude, Robin Williams is waiting to get into your booth. I think you should let him in." He leapt up, let Mr. Williams in, and seated him across from Shane and I on another couch. I've been close to celebrities before, but never in a situation where I was on equal ground. It was a strange feeling. Siezing the moment I said, "Hey...what's going on?" Someone else sitting in our area quickly took over and engaged him in intelligent conversation, while Shane and I just listened. Robin Williams was shortly ushered away, no doubt to see something cool, and Shane and I thought we should make our way out, too.

Now, E3 is really just a big "who has the coolest T-shirt contest". I was sporting my turbo-cool Battle Royale shirt (Battle Royale is a Japanese movie about a class of children that are forced to kill each other, and it has kind of a cult following). Several times throughout the day, people had stopped me to complement me on my shirt, so as we stepped over the rope I thought nothing of hearing someone say, "Hey, man. That is a great shirt." I gave my canned response, "Yeah...thanks," and pushed past him through the crowd. I had just been talking with Robin Williams after all, and I had no time to engage some hanger-on in meaningless prattle. Feeling a bit rude, I turned to at least make eye contact with the person, when I was confronted with a gigantic pair of blue eyes belonging to Elijah Wood. The shock of recognition went through me quick, so I was able to get out a stammering, "Oh...yeah...hey, man," before I forced my way past him. He had a big smile on his face, and said, "Yeah...hey," back. Now, if I see someone wearing a cool shirt, I might tell Kim or think to myself, "cool shirt". Rarely, will I actually stop the person to tell them, unless I'm in the mood to converse. So, Elijah Wood made, however small, some attempt to communicate with me, and I was too busy to talk to him. I could have asked him if he'd seen the trailer for the sequel, or what he thought of Brother, another movie starring Takeshi Kitano, or any number of questions about The Lord of the Rings movies or games. However, seeing that the moment had passed me by, I moved through the crowd. When Shane and I were out, I turned to him and said, "Did you see who that was?" Shane said, "Wasn't it one of your friends?" I said, "No...it was fucking Frodo." Shane's eyes got kind of big and he said, "Well, you waved him off so casually, I thought you knew the guy!" We headed over to our appointment to see the Half-Life 2 movie and discussed the conversation that might have been.

So there you have it. My run-ins with celebrities at E3. For all you Japanese Elijah Wood fans, I know this is probably not big news. But in my opinion, it is a pretty funny story. I guess I won the contest at E3. I'll have to get a printing for the back of my Battle Royale shirt that says, "Frodo digs my shirt."

Kim sent this link to me today, because she knows I love when video games get good press. As much as people like to blame video games for everything from school shootings to the war in Iraq, it's nice when the general media recognizes a study like this.

If you scan down to the May 23 posting, you'll see that I sent a letter to a Hollywood Reporter columnist recently about an error in a column. Today, I received a response from him.

Travis:

Yes, I'm well aware of my giant screw-up in the MATRIX column I did 10 days or so ago and that Keanu Reeves DOES NOT play Agent Smith in the film (but Hugo Weaving does). The flub was actually edited in by one of my superiors (talk about galling). But I don't pass the buck. It had my name on it, so it was ultimately my error.

I hope not to make a similarly innane mistake ever again. But I probably will.

Thanks for paying attention -- and for caring enough to take the time to write.

Ray Richmond

Kudos to Ray for replying to my letter and exonerating himself.

Kim is my girlfriend and a very good one at that, in most cases. Sometimes, though, she can falter. Today for instance, we went to Best Buy to buy DVDs. We go to Best Buy for DVDs about once a week to get the ones that came out that week that we want while they are on sale. Every time we go to Best Buy, we walk by the Pioneer 50" Plasma HDTV just to see what it costs. Today, it had gone down $1000 from when I last looked it, and there was a $1000 mail-in rebate on top of that bringing the TV down to the low low price of $8999. I looked at her and said, "Hey, it's $2000 cheaper than last time we were here. Want to get it?" Here is where your typical girlfriend would look at you mouth agape before saying, "Are you out of your fucking mind?!! $9000 for a TV? We need molding, a sink, a new air conditioner, roof repairs..." and on and on until the thought of a new TV is completely exorcised from your mind. Instead Kim says, "Do they still have two years 0%? Because if they do..." at which point we begin to work out the math on how much it would cost each of us over the next two years to pay off this ridiculous TV. So, it was up to me to be responsible and say, "I guess we don't need a $9000 TV today." We walked out of Best Buy with just our DVDs (Adaptation, Miller's Crossing, and 25th Hour which we haven't seen yet.) Maybe next week she can talk me into that TV.

In other news, I finally finished Snowcrash after taking some time away from reading. It's good, although the Sumerian neuro-hacking/Tower of Babel stuff gets a little thick in the middle. I started Dune Messiah and I hope to get through it pretty quickly.

E3 2003 Video is up. WARNING: the music contains profanity. I picked it because the chorus seemed somewhat appropriate, and it is a new song. Download it here. You are downloading the movie and the Divx installer, so run the installer first (MAC users go here for the Mac Divx installer). Then you can play the movie in either media player or the Divx player. Thanks to Jeremy for hosting. I feel that I should also add this is not a comprehensive showing. It is just some of the stuff that I thought looked good this year. I'll have the write-up posted soon.

I finished the E3 video last night. Now I just need to find some webspace to put it up. My space for this page is kind of small. Still working on the write up and The Matrix Reloaded review. One thing I was told to post here is about a recent email I sent to a Hollywood Reporter columnist. In his column, he referred to "Keanu Reeves' Agent Smith character". Usually I don't go for sending email corrections, but the guy's email address was right at the bottom of the column. Also, I hate it when people who work in the entertainment industry don't have any idea what they are talking about. Here is the email I sent to him:

I hope that your son has already pointed out this grievous error, but Keanu Reeves does not play Agent Smith in The Matrix movies (citing your 'The Pulse' column in the May 13 - 19 Hollywood Reporter). He plays Neo. Agent Smith is played by Hugo Weaving, who also stars in The Lord of the Rings movies. No, he doesn't play Frodo or Gandalf. He plays Elrond. Now, you might think this is trivial fan boy ranting, but I disagree. After all, you are the guy writing for the Hollywood Reporter. I would expect you to know at least something about the movie you are referencing, like say, the difference between the main character and main villain.

So, if you ever meet Keanu Reeves, don't tell him that you loved him in "that Twin Towers movie".

Travis Meacham

If I get a response, which I doubt, I'll post a follow-up.

I am still working on my E3 2003 write-up. Look for it in the coming days. You'll get to read about all the new games we saw, how I used my influence to get comedian and movie star Robin Williams into the Rockstar lounge, and how I was too busy to have a conversation with star of The Lord of the Rings movies Elijah Wood. All that plus a video.

Here's a quick late night update. We just got back from seeing The Matrix Reloaded. I really liked it, and I'll discuss it more when I have more time (probably this weekend). Despite Equilibrium coming out on DVD last Tuesday, Kim and I have only been able to find it in one store, the Virgin Megastore in Burbank...for $29.95. Both of our local Best Buys were out of it, so were two Targets, a Sam Goody, and a Suncoast. I did buy Grand Theft Auto: Vice City on PC this week, and it is as good as everyone says it is. I'm going to E3 again tomorrow, and I'll be writing up something and, hopefully, cutting together another highlight reel this weekend. I know that the one from last year is missing from the site, but I have it on my computer at work. I'll get it back up there next week. Now I'm going to bed.

This is going to be a busy week. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City on PC comes out today or tomorrow, Equilibrium comes out on DVD on Tuesday, E3 is Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, and The Matrix Reloaded comes out on Thursday. I plan on going to E3 all three days, so I'll try to do some updates from the show. I'm taking the video camera again, so I should be able to put together another highlight reel. I think I'm seeing The Matrix Reloaded on Thursday night.

Kim and I watched Ghost in the Shell yesterday and we were reminded that The Matrix takes a lot of inspiration from it.

Here is some good news. I just read that Daniel Cudmore (who played Colossus in X2) is signed for the third film. This is a good sign because there isn't even a hint of a script yet. Hopefully this means Colossus is getting more screen time in the third film. Also signed (rumored anyway): Famke Janssen (Jean Grey), Alan Cumming (Nightcrawler), and Rebecca Romijn-Stamos (Mystique).

If you're trying to avoid spoilers about The Matrix Reloaded, avoid the new Time magazine dated May 13. Apparently Richard Corliss, the Time magazine movie columnist, has given away most of the movie in his review.

I went to see X-Men 2 twice this weekend. Here is my lengthy spoiler free review, so feel free to read it without having seen the movie. The short version is that it is very very good. You really need to see the first X-Men before seeing it though, and the more recently the better. I hope this franchise takes off and can go for at least two more movies. I read that it did $33 million on the first day.
