Kim and I have been spending a lot of time playing World of Warcraft...a lot. In the spirit of giving props where props are due, I give you a picture of us with Thrall, the Orc warchief. Click the image for the bigger version.

Neither of us would be playing the WoW Beta if not for our buddy Shane. He delivers miracles on request. I cannot stress enough how good this game is.

Kim and I went to see System of a Down last night at the Greek theater. The show was a put together to commemorate the Armenian genocide that took place in the early 20th century at the hands of the Ottoman Empire. The members of System are all Armenian, so this cause strikes a particular chord with them. I think it's strange that I went through the entire American education system and never heard of this event. I think that is what they are trying to change. The concert was great, and something occurred to me while watching it; there aren't any Republican bands. Does liberalism just lend itself better to creating music, or is it that musicians gravitate to being liberal? I'm not a political person, but all you people who hate Republicans so much can at least thank them for making people so mad that they create good music. Here's a sample of System of a Down (scroll down and you can listen to samples).

As we all know by now, the Star Wars Trilogy comes to DVD on September 21st of this year. Lucasfilm has finally released some information about the DVD set. "Each film resides on its own disc, with sharp, pristene imagery restored and remastered by Lowry Digital Images, and the rich sound experience of the saga presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround EX. The films also include new commentary tracks, featuring insights from George Lucas, director Irvin Kershner, actress Carrie Fisher, sound designer Ben Burtt, and Industrial Light & Magic's Dennis Muren." I'm a little disappointed that they don't have DTS sound, but the Episodes I and II DVDs didn't have that either and neither did the Indiana Jones set.

Here are the features.

* Empire of Dreams: The Story of the Star Wars Trilogy - 2.5 hour documentary
* Episode III Behind the Scenes Preview: The Return of Darth Vader
* The Birth of the Lightsaber
* The Characters of Star Wars
* The Force Is With Them: The Legacy of Star Wars
* Star Wars Battlefront Trailer and Playable Demo
* Star Wars: Episode III Making the Game Preview
* Original Trailers and TV Spots
* Never-Before-Seen Production Gallery
* Posters and Print Campaigns
* Exclusive DVD-ROM Content

Now, the Spoiler Free for Episode III campaign is well known to readers of this website, and the Episode III related features on this DVD set fall into that category. So I will NOT be watching them. It will be the first true test of my will to resist footage from the film.

We went to see Kill Bill vol. 2 and Shaolin Soccer today at the Arclight. Kill Bill vol. 2 is great, and while it continues the story of vol. 1, it feels very different from vol. 1. It is not as violent, and has a lot more story and dialogue. KBv2 is the rare "sequel" that doesn't really require you to have seen the first movie. You could watch v2 without any knowledge of v1 and still know what is going on. If you liked v1, you'll like v2. If you hated v1, well...you probably won't like v2 either.

Shaolin Soccer is a damn silly movie. It's a great kids movie, if they don't mind the subtitles. The games in it really aren't soccer as you and I think of it, but rather people doing "finishing moves" in order to score goals. It's a fun movie, but leave your adult mind at the door. Also, I'd like to know if the original version had a rap-remax of "Kung Fu Fighting" as the song to run over the credits, or if that was some shit Miramax would think is really funny. Come on, guys! Not every single comedic movie that features karate has to have that damn song on the soundtrack!

GiaS Summer Movie Preview

I've been getting emails lately asking what movies will be good this summer. All I can offer are my recommendations and the ones that I'm looking forward to, so here they are starting with next week.

Kill Bill vol 2 - April 16th
Official Site Trailer
The second half of Quentin Tarantino's ultraviolent 70ish samurai throwback finds The Bride with three people left on her list to kill, including Bill himself. Vol 2 will also feature some flashbacks to the training of The Bride, and hopefully resolve all the loose ends left dangling from vol 1. Side note: Kill Bill vol 1 comes out on DVD next Tuesday.

The Punisher - April 16th
Official Site Trailer
After seeing the most recent trailer and reading some reviews from test screenings, I think this could be good. If it stays in tone with the comic book, it will be dark and violent and very focused on revenge. Punisher does not have super powers or anything, he's just really angry with lots of guns. This could be just a good action movie.

Van Helsing - May 7th
Official Site Trailer
Wolverine playing a monster killer with Selene in tow all directed by the guy that did The Mummy and The Mummy Returns. It sounds good to me. I'm a bit hesitant because it could be silly instead of good, but I've read that Stephen Sommers was leaning towards a little more drama for this series.

Troy - May 14th
Official Site Trailer
Unfortunately, The Return of the King has set the bar pretty high for movies claiming to be "epic" involving guys and swords. However, I'm optimistic about this one. It's got a good cast in Brad Pitt, Orlando Bloom, Eric Bana, Peter O'Toole, Sean Bean, and Brian Cox, and Wolfgang Petersen has a good eye for big action.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban - June 4th
Official Site Trailer
Sporting a new director, Alfonso Cuaron, and a cast of children growing older, Azkaban will feel different from the first two movies. Gary Oldman as Sirius Black is spot-on perfect casting, though, so this could be the best one yet if he gets ample screen time. Live action Dementors will be good.

The Chronicles of Riddick - June 11th
Official Site Trailer
This sequel to 2000's Pitch Black is apparently very different than its predecessor. Pitch Black was sci-fi horror while Riddick has been called "the dark Star Wars". Writer/director David Twohy plans this to be the first movie of a trilogy. I love the Riddick character, so this one could be big to me.

Spider-Man 2 - June 30th
Official Site Trailer
This is a no brainer. You're all going to see it. Sadly, I won't be making an appearance in this one unless they use archived footage from the first movie. Doctor Octopus looks good, and I'm glad there is only one super villain. Just get in line like everyone else.

Other movies of note to watch for:
The Day After Tomorrow - May 28th
Trailer
It's the end of the world!...Again!

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow - June 25th
Trailer
Don't think of The Shadow or The Rocketeer...this one's different.

I, Robot - July 16th
Trailer
It's robot apocalypse and only Will Smith can stop it!

The Bourne Supremacy - July 23rd
More Matt-Damon-spy-movie stuff. Should be good.

The Manchurian Candidate - July 30th
A remake of a near perfect movie. But it has Denzel, so hope lives.

Open Water - July 30th
I've read it's Jaws meets The Blair Witch Project.

Collateral - August 6th
Tom Cruise is a hitman who forces Jamie Foxx to drive him around. Hilarity ensues...maybe not.

Alien vs Predator - August 13th
Trailer
Shut up! How can this go wrong? Aliens...Predators...fighting...the end.

Here's a conversation Kim and I had over messenger recently:

Kim: Hey, are you off this Friday?
Travis: Nope. Are you?
Kim: Nope
Travis: Why would I be off this Friday?
Kim: You guys always get the holidays off.
Travis: Is Friday a holiday?
Kim: Yeah, it's the day Jesus flew away or something.

We went to see Hellboy yesterday, and it's really good. If you like comic book movies, you should really enjoy it. However, having said that, if you are getting a little tired of comic book movies and comic book characters, you should steer quite clear of Hellboy. I was introduced to the Hellboy comics by Yoshi, and I read through all the books he had, including Seed of Destruction on which the movie is largely based, in a single weekend. I really liked the blue-collar attitude of Hellboy and the humor that was always present. I think the movie captures all of that while adding some things to the story that weren't in the original book. It's good.

I forgot to mention that while we were in Detroit we saw Dawn of the Dead. I was extremely impressed with it. I am not a big fan of the original, quite the contrary. I thought it was damned stupid. However, DotD 2004 is a great horror movie. It has a lot of style, some light-hearted humor, and lots of zombie action. I really can't recommend it enough.

Finally today is the 10th anniversary of Kurt Cobain's death, so I've been listening to all my Nirvana recently. It still holds up pretty well. I was about 16 when I first heard Nirvana, and I really loved their energy. Sure, they were just playing four different power chords over and over, but no one else was doing it and, at the time, it was sorely needed. I didn't weep when he died, mostly because I didn't know him. I was actually getting ready for a date when they announced on the news that they found his body. My first thought was, "Damn that sucks," but that quickly turned into, "Hey, I can bring this up if there is a lull in the conversation." It's probably a good thing that he went out at the top of his game, otherwise he might have ended up the butt of every joke like David Crosby or Keith Richards.

April 1st to me means, "Stay off the internet," because all the websites I read still think it's really clever to post bogus stories in the hopes that someone out there will forget that it is April Fool's Day and lose their mind because they read that Ryan Seacrest is going to play Gandalf in The Hobbit or something. So as you wade into the internet today with your a-lot-of-what-I-read-on-the-internet-is-bullshit boots on, be sure to tuck in the legs of your EVERYTHING-I-read-on-the-internet-today-is-bullshit pants and try to remember it's April 1st.

In other news, Kim and I have decided to sell our condo and move back to Kentucky. It's just too expensive out here and I think I'm getting tired of movies anyway.
