Today is Mollie Greenberg's 14th birthday. Since I don't have a picture taken of her on her birthday, here is a photoshop Jeremy did of a picture taken of me on my 21st birthday when I drank for about 10 hours straight. I think this was taken during hour 6. That cigar was the beginning of the end for me and vomiting soon followed.

I posted my review of Saw. Of the movies that we saw over the past few days however, Primer is the one that is haunting me the most. It is being compared to the likes of Memento and Donnie Darko and is definitely worth the attention. I'd like to write a review or at least a theory of the events like my Mulholland Dr. theory (not to be read unless you have already seen it) but I'm going to need a second viewing for that. I'm going back on Wednesday to see it again, so hopefully I'll be able to figure it all out. If you like science fiction and independent movies, or have an interest in filmmaking, I strongly urge you to find Primer and see it. It reminded me that science fiction does not have to be all aliens, robots, and space travel. Sometimes it is just, "What if...?" Here is where Primer is playing over the next few months.

This will be a movie weekend for us. Last night we saw Saw (trailer) and sat in on a Q&A with the writer and director. Tonight we saw The Grudge (trailer), and tomorrow we're going to see Primer (trailer) followed by a Q&A with it's director. I was hoping we could catch The Machinist (trailer) as well, but I'm not sure we'll be able to do that. Anyway, I wrote a review of The Grudge, so check it out here. Basically, I think it's a lot like The Ring. The poster even resembles the Japanese Ring poster.

This comes straight from the official Star Wars website: "The highly anticipated teaser trailer for Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith will make its theatrical debut with Pixar's The Incredibles in the U.S. and Canada on November 5." I'm also reading that Access Hollywood or Entertainment Tonight or some such show will be showing the teaser earlier in the week. I can feel my weakness when I think of this teaser being available and not watching it, but I'm going to stand true and resist. "Once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny."
Let me just address those of you who are preparing to post the comment, "WHO CARES!!?? IT'S GOING TO SUCK!!" like this: GET THE FUCK OFF MY WEBSITE!!

Yoshi pointed me to this software called Nasa World Wind. It basically gives you the Earth and allows you to zoom in and look at satellite pictures taken from space. Most of the US maps are mapped to the meter in black and white by the USGS, but some areas are mapped in color to 0.3 meters. I found it a little depressing to look at the difference in urban sprawl and the amount of property we own compared to our parents. These pictures are big, so if your browser shrinks it to fit in the window you should be able to hover over the bottom right corner and get a little box with arrows that will let you expand the picture to full size so you can scroll around it. These pictures are all from about the same altitude (~1500 meters). Here is a picture of my Dad's place. I outlined the property in red. My parents live in the sticks in small town Kentucky, so there aren't lots of houses near by. Here is Kim's Dad's place. They live in a bigger city in a nice suburban part of town. Here is our little corner of heaven. Nice, huh? Anyway, this software is pretty cool. Other parts of the world are not as well mapped, but you can still see major geographical highlights, and you can download detailed add-on maps for some areas.

After putting out the request for recommendations on ninja movies, it looks like Ninja Scroll is still held in high esteem. I first saw Ninja Scroll in college, and I thought it was a damn good animated action movie. I never expected it to stick in the culture. After doing a little searching, I found out that a new Ninja Scroll DVD celebrating the 10 year anniversary came out last year. I might have to pick this up to replace the full screen version I currently have. There was a "sequel" titled Ninja Resurrection, but it actually has nothing to do with the original movie. Something I did not know was that there was a series and there is a Ninja Scroll 2 (Jûbei ninpûchô 2) currently in preproduction. It is being directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri, the same guy who did the first one, so it could be something to watch for. Some other ninja movies that made the list that I did not expect were From Ninja With Love, Live and Let Ninja, and the Second Season of Friends. Who knew?
In other movie news, Dreamworks released the teaser for The Ring 2, the sequel to my favorite horror movie in recent memory.

I stalled out on a script I was working on, so I decided to move on to a different idea from the notebook. I am going to write a ninja script. The first stage is research, so I wanted to see what the favorite ninja movies out there are. I was shocked to find this out.
Do you mean to tell me that NO ONE on the internet has compiled a list of the top 10 ninja movies? Unbelievable. I demand that you post your favorite ninja movies right now in the comments section.
Also, a description of the Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith teaser is out there on the net. I've forwarded it to my filter, and he has read it. I'll remind you that the teaser and trailer do NOT fall within the "viewable" category set by my own proclamation made in the last paragraph of my Attack of the Clones review. So I will NOT be watching or discussing the trailers. Don't forget, your favorite ninja movies in the comments.

Mollie complains that I always post the same stuff up here, so here is a picture of me with facial hair! It's a bit old, and I'm no longer sporting the Johnny Depp look, but here it is anyway. Sorry for scowling.

I read yesterday that 20th Century Fox hired David Benioff to write the Wolverine movie. I like it that they are doing a Wolverine movie, but I'm not sure about this choice of writer. I suppose we'll have to see who they get to direct and if they can rope Hugh Jackman into another franchise. Also, I'm not sure what this says about the future of X-Men 3. With Bryan Singer doing Superman now, maybe Fox is wanting to push ahead with the Wolverine movie and put off X-Men 3 until Singer is free. There are also rumors that Buffy scribe Joss Whedon could be writing or directing X-Men 3, but I don't think anyone has signed anything yet. So what will this movie be about? The way I see it, since the X-Men movies are already centered on Wolverine, this movie needs to keep him out of the costume completely. So, maybe they'll do a big Weapon X/Sabretooth arc, or maybe they'll do the stuff in Japan with Wolverine fighting ninjas. Or, they could have Wolverine go back to his home town and find that a crooked casino has moved in and taken over. Then he has to run for sheriff and clean up the town. Or maybe they already made that movie. I really like this cover because of the reference to this image from Apocalypse Now.
