"The gunslinger waited for the time of the drawing and dreamed his long dreams of the Dark Tower, to which he would someday come at dusk and approach, winding his horn, to do some unimaginable final battle."
I've been reading The Dark Tower, albeit slowly. I have a stack on my nightstand of stuff to read, and I've been reading everything else except The Dark Tower since it came out. I think I have a subconscious fear that it will not end in a satisfying way, or maybe I just don't want it to end at all. I started reading this story about 10 years ago, and now it is ending. Through all the books Roland talks about reaching the Tower, but it always felt so far away. It was never going to happen in the book I was currently reading. I was always waiting on Stephen King to write the next one. Well, I guess he fulfilled his end of the bargain so I should do my part and see how it ends.
Some of the regular readers have voiced concern over the content of the ads being run on this site; things like, "What is your deal with Jude Law now?" Here is how it works. I put code in my webpage that says, "Google, read my page." The Google robots read the page and then decide which ads to run. So, when I posted Ben's hurricane journal, we got Unicef ads and charity groups and hurricane help and things like that. When I posted the Sky Captain thing, we got Jude Law ads. So the ads should reflect things I'm talking about, but I'm not picking them from a list or anything. They are generated by Google. Now that I've mentioned Jude Law again, we'll probably get a new batch of Jude Law ads.

I put together a video of some of the footage we shot while in line for the Star Wars DVD Monday night. Click here to download the zip. I'll post the pictures in the next few days. Also, don't miss the photoshopping fun in the forums (I take no responsibility for what you may see in there. You've been warned). This is just a preview of the awfulness that will happen to me on Friday thanks to Pat. More on that as it happens.

Mike and I went to the Star Wars DVD midnight sale in Westwood last night. There will be more pics and video coming soon...

Kim, Mike, and I went to see Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow tonight and we were not impressed. I guess it is technologically impressive, but the acting is very flat, the story is weak, and the action wasn't very exciting. Instead of writing a review myself, I decided to channel a 12 year-old mallrat and have him write a description of what he remembers about the movie. I would warn you about spoilers, but I doubt they'll make much difference. So here you go:
So it's New York like in the 40s or something and this doctor guy gets off the Goodyear Blimp and he's all scared because someone's chasing him. So Reporter Gwyneth finds out and she's all like, "I have to take lots of pictures!" but these giant robots fly in and they're all like WHIRRRR!! WHIRRRR!! STOMP!! STOMP!! BRRZZZTT!! BRRZZZTT!! Then New Dumbledore finds out and the police are all, "Holy shit! Giant robots! We need one British actor in a WWII airplane!" Then Jude Law shows up and he's all ZOOOMMMM EEEEEAAAAWWWW GAKGAKGAKGAKGAKGAKGAK and he blows up a giant robot and the rest of them leave. Then Reporter Gwyneth gets in Jude Law's plane and they fly around talking. Then these flying robots attack Jude Law's base, so he and Reporter Gwyneth fly around and chase one of them with blue sparks until they find out that all the giant robots are made in Nepal. So they fly to Nepal and get trapped in a cave by some shirpas, but they escape and these monks are all, "I know where Totemcoffin or whoever is, but you have to fly around and talk some more to get there." So Reporter Gwyneth and Jude Law fly around again but run out of gas, but it's OK because Lara Croft With An Eyepatch shows up in a flying aircraft carrier and picks them up and she's all like, "Hi, I'm British. I won't tell you how I lost my eye and it doesn't matter anyway because I still have EXCELLENT depth perception. I know where the secret island is, but you have to fly around and talk some more to get there." Then Reporter Gwyneth and Jude Law invade the secret island, but they have to fight Darth Maul before Noah's Rocket Ark takes off and blows up the world.

Whenever a hurricane hits, news stations love to send some intern to the heart of the hurricane and film them attempting to talk. Not to be out done, our very own Guyinasuit Alabama correspondent Ben has been keeping the forum abreast of the events from inside Hurricane Ivan.
Ben (9/15/04): Well the media has effectively scared the shit out of the State of Alabama.... they have evacuated every city south of I-10, shut down south bound I-65 and turned it into another northbound lane. Almost every college has closed for the remainder of the week. All public schools as far north as Birmingham have been closed for the remainder of the week. The grocery stores are bare, gas stations are drying up..... It is nuts here, plus it is a gorgeous day outside.... 75 degrees, little sun, nice breeze... perfect day.. Now I think some precautions are well founded but I think we are overdoing it a little here. This could be my last Post..... I love you all ....
Ben (9/15/04): They just shut down I-65 from here to the coast... that's a little over 300 miles of interstate.... 4-8 lanes dedicated to northbound travel only... and it is still backed up. People are going crazy down here....
Ben (9/16/04): So I came into work... I think I am set at home Flash lights... books, jugs of wine and peanutbutter.... I'm good for like a week.... we will see how long I stay at work.
Ben (9/16/04): Well .. work closes at noon today.. they are saying roads will be impassable by 5.... huh... I just don't know how much I believe all this stuff.... The funny thing is, the Alabama EMS service announced they are no longer working, they do not respond when winds reach 45 mph, so you are on your own... LOL... remember tourniquets, bandadges... we will see you tommorrow... maybe..... LOL. My State is Silly.
Good luck, Ben!

You may have noticed that there is a Google ad banner on the page. Do not worry, this will not lead to pop-ups or spyware. It is just Google's Adsense program. Basically, Google reads what I write about and creates ads geared towards that stuff. So if I'm writing about DVDs, games, and books, you'll see ads for DVDs, games, and books. So if you're interested in DVDs, games, or books and would like to buy a DVD, game, or book, I recommend that you click on one of the ads on this page to search for your DVD, game, or book and purchase it. We are also looking into these kinds of programs for Amazon and Blockbuster; not because we are greedy whores, but because we use services provided by Amazon, Blockbuster, and Google to find DVDs, games, and books and would like to endorse the sites we use. So remember, when looking for a DVD, game, or book, look no further than Guyinasuit.com!! Your resource for all things DVD, game, or book!
...
Ok, all kidding aside. Despite being somewhat distasteful, we're going to try some of these "money on the internet" programs on this site because there is money to be had out there and I'm not too proud to say, "I want some!" We will not tolerate ANY POP-UP ADS OF ANY KIND, and all the ads will be based on stuff I like and stuff I write about. So, seriously, if you're looking for something mentioned on the site, check out the ads and click around. We'd appreciate it.

One week from today I'll be watching The Star Wars Trilogy DVD set, and reading the seventh and final book in The Dark Tower series aptly titled The Dark Tower. September 21st also brings us a new Green Day album, new versions of the soundtracks for the original Star Wars movies, and two PC games; Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War and Star Wars Battlefront. This could be an expensive day for me.
<geek>I'm basically back into comic books at this point. I've been buying different titles every week for the last few months. In an effort to catch up on a lot of the stories I missed over the years, I've been borrowing and buying graphic novels. I recently finished what many consider to be the best comic book arc ever told; The Dark Phoenix Saga. It's written by Chris Claremont, the seminal X-Men scribe of the past 20 years, and was originally published in 1980. I can see why people say this story is so important because Marvel has been retelling it over and over in different iterations of X-Men books ever since. It seems that whenever they need a big event, they kill Jean Grey and bring her back as Phoenix. Recently Astonishing X-Men planted a ruse about bringing back Jean Grey, who is now dead, but resurrected another classic X-Man who was thought killed years ago. I put the panels below. Click for the bigger versions. Here is the set up; Kitty Pryde phases through several hundred feet of an alien metal to reach this room while the X-Men are assaulting the building.</geek>
Good stuff. Point and laugh if you like, but I'm glad to be back into this entertainment medium. In fact, I've been photographed in line at a comic book store and said photograph was published in a newspaper.

Sorry about the dry spell here. Sometimes there just isn't a whole hell of a lot going on. Our condo complex got fumigated recently, so we had to move into a hotel for three days. That was interesting; being locked in one room with our dogs all the time, but not in a bad way. We got moved back into our place on Saturday and got all the food unpacked over the holiday weekend. Nothing like spending $20,000 and having everything look exactly the same.
This is the dry season for movies as well. Resident Evil: Apocalypse comes out this weekend and Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow is next weekend, but other than that, there isn't much out there. Sky Captain might be good and it might be terrible. I plan on seeing it, unless the reviews are really really bad. I only pay attention to the reviews in extreme cases.
I played a couple of good game demos recently; Evil Genius and Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault. Evil Genius is a lot like a game I really liked from several years back called Dungeon Keeper. Basically, you are a 60's Bond villain and you have to build up your hideout and recruit minions while keeping Bond-types from infiltrating and destroying your base. The demo is a tutorial and shows you the gist of the game without giving you all the good stuff. Pacific Assault is the sequel to Medal of Honor: Allied Assault. It's yet another WWII themed shooter, only this time you battle the Japanese. From the demo, it looks like the graphics are better and the A.I. has been overhauled. Also, there is more reliance on your squadmates and, eventually, you will be able to direct their movements by giving orders. It looks good so far. Both demos are available from FilePlanet.
Last, but not least, in two weeks the Star Wars Trilogy comes out on DVD.
