In 1999,
Star Wars Episode I - The Phantom Menace was released in theaters.
This was the first new Star Wars movie in 16 years. There
was no option for online tickets back then in Lexington, KY, so we had
to get in line. The tickets went on sale Wednesday. I got in
line at the Woodhill Theater Sunday night. I was third. I
went by the theater just to have a look and see if anyone was already
there, so I didn't tell anyone I was getting in line yet. I can
remember my girlfriend at the time coming home late and calling me on my
cell (we were living together). The call went like this:
REBECCA:
Where are you?
ME: I'm at
the Woodhill theater. REBECCA: It's
kind of late, what are you seeing? Don't you have to work tomorrow? ME:
Well...yeah, but I'm not going. I'm not coming home tonight either. REBECCA: ...
ME: I'm in line for Star Wars tickets. (I hear her walking
through the house). ME: Hello? REBECCA:
Where the fuck is the bed? ME: Oh yeah,
I brought the mattress out here. You know, for me to sleep on. REBECCA: ...
ME: Do you
want to come out here? It'll be fun...like camp-- <CLICK>
So I lived outside the Woodhill theater for 4 days to get
tickets. It was a great time. By the second day we had couches, a
cover, TV, cable, a Nintendo 64 (with a plethora of games from the Electronics
Boutique where I worked), DVD player, and beer and pizza being delivered in
shifts by people who wanted tickets by weren't hard enough to stay out there.
Or perhaps they took their jobs a little more serious...either way. I
scanned these pictures, so the quality varies. Also, I tried to fix some
of the lighting problems as best I could.

The tickets went on sale a week before the movie was
released. On the day of the movie, I uhh...dressed up like
Darth Maul. I was not the only one dressed up, but I was the
best (a dubious honor). Since there was no reserved seating,
we had to get in line at the theater about 8 hours before the
screening (about 4:00pm for the midnight show). Unfortunately
for me, grease paint and custom contact lenses are not meant to be
worn that long. After some pictures were taken and some
interviews with the local news were done, I tried to remove my
costume. Much to my chagrin, I found out that grease paint is
not water-soluble and only comes off with lots of soap and hot
water. So all I ended up doing was smearing red and black
paint over my face and into my hair. This look was later
dubbed "Goth Travis". |
